How to have a social media detox

We as consumers often forget that social media exists to make our lives better! As social media numbers continue to grow so can the time you spend on it per day. If you feel like you’re spending too much time, or that the time spent isn’t making you happy you may want to consider taking a break from social media from time to time or turn it into a positive hobby.

Here are some tips on how to turn social media into something positive:

Check who you follow
Are all of the accounts you follow on Instagram making you feel good about yourself? If there are accounts that aren’t, unfollow! Or mute the account for a little while, that way you won’t see their posts in your feed but don’t have to go to the extreme of un-following (and you can always un-mute later).

Set a limit
Instagram has a really handy tool, ‘Your activity’ which details how much time you spend on Instagram and on what days. You can even set a reminder in the app to alert you when you’ve reached a certain amount of time on the app for the day! Trial setting your daily limit slightly lower than your daily average – who knows, you might not even miss it.

Take a break
The thing about social media that we forget is that it’s a bit of a time waster. Think about how long we spend just scrolling through Facebook and Instagram when we could be doing something productive like researching healthy recipes, cleaning or hanging out with the family. Something that works really well is only using these apps when we’re in ‘limbo’, neither here nor there. This could be on the train to work, while waiting in line to order our morning coffee or for the kettle to boil. If we restrict our usage to a time where we can’t really do anything productive anyway, we can slowly stop spending so much (could-be productive) time on social media!
